About the club

More than radio

Welcome to the Shelby Amateur Radio Club, an ARRL-affiliated club promoting amateur radio in Shelby, Cleveland County and the surrounding area since 1957.

We host the Shelby Hamfest, one of the largest amateur radio conventions in the South. Its proceeds keep our six repeaters on the air and support local charities. We also sponsor the Cleveland County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) group, which assists local emergency management, the Red Cross and other served agencies.

What we do

Service, skills and a lot of fun

ARES & emergency service

Our club sponsors ARES of Cleveland County, taking part in emergency management and health department drills, Red Cross events and more.

Public service events

Members provide communications for races and community events across the area.

Parks on the Air

Two club call signs, W4NYR and K4KUT, are registered with POTA for members to use on park activations.

Transmitter hunting

High-tech hide-and-seek: find the hidden transmitter while sharpening your direction-finding skills.

Field Day & demonstrations

We show amateur radio to the public each year at ARRL Field Day, and for Scout troops and schools on request.

Elmering new hams

Experienced members mentor newcomers, from studying for the license to getting on the air.
